Ingredients
Scale
For the Bread:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp ground nutmeg
¼ tsp ground cloves
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
¾ cup brown sugar
¼ cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
¼ cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups peeled and diced apples (about 2 medium)
For the Streusel Topping (Optional):
¼ cup all-purpose flour
¼ cup brown sugar
2 tbsp cold butter
½ tsp cinnamon
¼ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
In a large bowl, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then mix in milk and vanilla.
Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing just until combined. Fold in diced apples.
Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. If using streusel, combine topping ingredients with a fork until crumbly and sprinkle over batter.
Bake for 50-65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool in pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best texture
Bread tastes even better the next day as flavors develop
Store wrapped at room temperature for 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months
For extra moisture, add ½ cup applesauce to the batter
Drizzle with caramel sauce or cream cheese glaze for added decadence
