Homemade Apple Hand Pies

Delicious homemade apple hand pies with a flaky crust and sweet, spiced apple filling that evoke nostalgia and warmth.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
  • 2 cups apples, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar until combined.
  2. Cut in the chilled, diced butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until a dough forms. Wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  4. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  5. Combine apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice in another bowl. Let sit while dough chills.
  6. Roll out dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick and cut into circles.
  7. Place a spoonful of apple filling on one half of each circle and seal with a fork.
  8. Brush tops with beaten egg.
  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For best results, ensure butter is chilled. Customize with other fruits or spices as desired.
