Apple Turnovers: A Delicious Family Favorite

Apple Turnovers

Flaky, golden puff pastry parcels filled with sweet cinnamon-spiced apples, baked to perfection. These handheld treats are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dessert when served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 3 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and finely diced
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sugar for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix diced apples, both sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, cornstarch and vanilla until well combined.
  3. Roll out puff pastry sheets slightly. Cut each sheet into 4 equal squares (8 total).
  4. Spoon about 2-3 tbsp apple mixture onto one half of each square, leaving a border.
  5. Beat egg with water. Brush edges with egg wash, fold pastry over filling to form triangles, and seal edges with a fork.
  6. Transfer to baking sheet. Brush tops with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar if using. Cut 2-3 small slits in each for steam.
  7. Bake 20-25 minutes until puffed and golden brown. Cool 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add 1 tbsp caramel sauce to each apple portion before sealing
  • Can substitute pie crust for puff pastry for a different texture
  • Freeze unbaked turnovers on a tray, then transfer to bags – bake from frozen adding 5-10 minutes
  • Drizzle with powdered sugar glaze (½ cup powdered sugar + 1-2 tbsp milk) after baking
  • Add 2 tbsp raisins or chopped walnuts to apple mixture if desired
