Cheddar Biscuit Loaf

A golden, buttery loaf packed with layers of sharp cheddar and fresh herbs, combining the best qualities of biscuits and pull-apart bread. Perfect with soups or as a standalone snack.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh chives
  • 1 cup buttermilk (plus 1 tbsp for brushing)
  • 1 egg
  • Optional Topping:
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tbsp grated Parmesan
  • ½ tsp dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Prep: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×5 loaf pan.
  2. Mix Dry: Whisk flour, baking powder, salt, garlic and onion powders.
  3. Cut Butter: Work butter into flour with pastry cutter until pea-sized crumbs form.
  4. Add Cheese: Stir in cheddar and chives.
  5. Bind: Make a well. Whisk buttermilk and egg, then stir into flour until just combined.
  6. Layer: Press half dough into pan. Sprinkle with ½ cup extra cheese. Top with remaining dough.
  7. Bake: Brush with buttermilk. Bake 45-50 mins until golden. Cool 10 mins in pan.
  8. Finish: Mix topping ingredients, brush over warm loaf.
