Ultimate Cheese Bagels

A delightful fusion of traditional bagel dough and cheesy goodness, these homemade cheese bagels are fresh, warm, and full of flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (approx. 2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Set aside for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 ½ cups of flour and salt. Make a well in the center, add the yeast mixture and softened butter. Stir until a rough dough forms, then gradually add the remaining flour.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for about an hour until doubled in size.
  4. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and poke a hole in the center to form a bagel shape. Let them rest for 15 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Boil a large pot of water, then reduce to a simmer. Boil the bagels for 30 seconds on each side, remove with a slotted spoon, and place on a lined baking sheet. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with cheese.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Notes

You can customize the cheese and add herbs for unique flavors. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days, or freeze for 2-3 months.
