Chocolate Chip Brownie Cookie Bars

  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Brownie Layer:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • Optional:
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Sea salt flakes for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch pan with parchment paper.
  2. Make cookie dough: Cream butter and sugars until fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Mix flour, baking soda, and salt; gradually add to wet ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips.
  3. Prepare brownie batter: Melt butter, then whisk in sugar, cocoa, salt, and baking powder. Cool slightly. Beat in vanilla and eggs. Stir in flour until just combined.
  4. Layer: Press 2/3 cookie dough into pan. Pour brownie batter over top. Drop remaining cookie dough in spoonfuls across surface.
  5. Bake 30-35 minutes until toothpick inserted in center comes out with moist crumbs (not wet batter).
  6. Cool completely in pan before slicing into squares.
