Chocolate Sourdough Scones

Delightful scones with a tangy twist from sourdough and rich chocolate, perfect for brunch or cozy mornings.

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 cup sourdough starter (discard or active)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until combined.
  3. Cut in the cold, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Gently fold in the sourdough starter, chocolate chips, egg, and vanilla until just combined.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a circle about 1 inch thick.
  6. Use a sharp knife to cut the dough into wedges and transfer them to the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and fragrant.
  8. Allow them to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with butter or clotted cream. These can be made ahead and frozen for future enjoyment.
