Easy Classic Swiss Steak with Onion Gravy

A heartwarming and flavorful dish featuring tender round steak slow-cooked in rich onion gravy, perfect for family dinners.

  • 2 pounds round steak
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. Cut the round steak into 4-6 serving pieces and season with salt and pepper. Dredge in flour.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet and brown the steak pieces on both sides for 3-4 minutes. Transfer to a baking dish.
  4. Sauté sliced onions in the same skillet until golden, about 6-8 minutes.
  5. Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and tomato paste to the onions and bring to a simmer.
  6. Pour the onion gravy over the steak in the baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 1.5 to 2 hours.
  7. Serve warm with mashed potatoes or rice, garnishing with parsley.

Notes

Ensure steaks are at room temperature before cooking for even cooking. Watch onions to avoid burning while sautéing.
