Creamy Orange Custard

Creamy Orange Custard

A silky smooth citrus custard with bright orange flavor and velvety texture, perfect as an elegant dessert or afternoon treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In medium saucepan, heat milk over medium heat until steaming but not boiling.
  2. In separate bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, orange juice, zest, cornstarch and salt until smooth.
  3. Slowly pour hot milk into egg mixture while whisking constantly.
  4. Return mixture to saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly with wooden spoon, until thickened (about 5-7 minutes).
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and liqueur (if using).
  6. Strain through fine-mesh sieve into serving dishes or ramekins.
  7. Cover surface directly with plastic wrap to prevent skin forming and chill for at least 4 hours.
  8. Serve cold, garnished with whipped cream and orange slices.

Notes

  • For dairy-free version: use full-fat coconut milk instead of dairy milk
  • Can be made 2-3 days ahead – flavor improves with time
  • For firmer texture, increase cornstarch to 3 tablespoons
  • Try with blood oranges when in season for beautiful color
