Crispy Southern Fried Catfish

A nostalgic recipe for crispy fried catfish that brings heartwarming comfort to the dinner table.

  • 4 pieces of catfish fillets
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Rinse the catfish fillets under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.
  2. Pour buttermilk over the fillets and let them soak for about 15 minutes.
  3. Mix together cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and paprika in another shallow plate.
  4. Heat oil in a skillet to about 350°F.
  5. Remove fillets from buttermilk and dredge in the cornmeal mixture.
  6. Fry the coated fillets in hot oil for 5-7 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
  7. Drain on paper towels before serving.

Notes

Using room temperature ingredients leads to better frying results; store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
