Savory Hamburger Steaks with Rich Onion Gravy

A comforting classic featuring juicy beef patties in a rich, savory onion gravy that elevates family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20 for juiciness)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (use panko for extra crunch)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (or olive oil for a more robust flavor)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently and shape into four patties.
  2. Sear the steaks: Heat vegetable oil in a skillet and cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove from skillet.
  3. Caramelize onions: In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook for 5-7 minutes until softened and golden brown.
  4. Make the gravy: Sprinkle flour over onions, stir, then gradually add beef broth while stirring. Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and season as needed. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened.
  5. Combine: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon the gravy over each patty, and simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  6. Serve: Dish up alongside fluffy mashed potatoes or rice and steamed vegetables.

Notes

Use high-quality ingredients for best flavor. You can substitute onions with mushrooms for a different taste.
