Deliciously Homemade Apple Cider

Craft your own homemade apple cider, balancing sweet and tart flavors with a blend of spices and citrus for a cozy fall drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1012 fresh apples (mix of sweet and tart like Fuji, Gala, and Granny Smith)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 cup sugar (optional, to taste)
  • Water (enough to cover the fruit)

Instructions

  1. Wash and quarter the apples, keeping the skins on.
  2. In a large pot, combine the apples, orange slices, lemon slices, cinnamon stick, cloves, and sugar.
  3. Fill the pot with enough water to cover the fruit, about 8-10 cups.
  4. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer.
  5. Simmer for about 120 minutes, stirring occasionally and mashing the apples with a potato masher every 30 minutes.
  6. After 2 hours, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean pot or pitcher.
  7. Discard the solids and serve hot or cold, garnished with additional cinnamon sticks if desired.

Notes

For a sweeter cider, use more sweet apples or add sugar. For spiced variations, add nutmeg, ginger, or allspice.
