Homemade Flour Tortillas

A simple and delicious recipe for homemade flour tortillas that are soft, warm, and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 & 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (195g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 & 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup warm water (120mL)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Whisk to blend.
  2. Pour in the vegetable oil and warm water, mixing until the dough forms a ball.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes until smooth.
  4. Divide the dough into 8 balls, cover with a damp cloth, and let rest for 15-20 minutes.
  5. On a floured surface, roll each ball out to just under 1/8 inch thick.
  6. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and cook each tortilla for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown spots appear.
  7. Transfer cooked tortillas to a plate lined with a tea towel to keep warm.

Notes

Too much flour makes the dough tough; add flour 1 tablespoon at a time if sticky. Store tortillas in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days, refrigerate for up to a week, or freeze for up to 3 months.
