Ultimate Homemade Indian Butter Chicken

  • 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat until bubbly (about 2 minutes).
  2. Add chopped onion, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Sauté until onions are translucent (5-7 minutes).
  3. Add chicken pieces and cook until browned on all sides (4-5 minutes).
  4. Stir in tomato puree, garam masala, cumin, coriander, and season with salt and pepper. Cook for another 5 minutes.
  5. Reduce heat, slowly stir in heavy cream, and let simmer until chicken is fully cooked (about 10 minutes).
  6. Stir in chopped cilantro before serving.
  7. Serve over basmati rice or with warm naan.

Notes

For extra flavor, marinate chicken in yogurt and spices a few hours before cooking.
