  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (between 110°F to 115°F)
  • 1 tablespoon malt syrup or honey
  • Cooking spray or oil for greasing the bowl
  • Toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or garlic

Instructions

  1. Combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the bread flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the foamy yeast mixture and malt syrup.
  3. Stir to combine, then knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  6. Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil, adding malt syrup or honey.
  7. Divide the dough into 8 pieces and shape each into a bagel.
  8. Boil each bagel for 1-2 minutes on each side.
  9. Place boiled bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet, add toppings, and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
