  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • Zest of an orange, divided
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature (for frosting)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange extract (for frosting)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (for frosting)
  • 3 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest (for garnish)
  • Cinnamon for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Line a 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices until well combined. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and dark brown sugar together until creamy—about 2 minutes.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla and orange extracts, mixing until fully incorporated. Add the sour cream and a tablespoon of orange zest, mixing until combined.
  5. Gradually mix half of the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Add the milk and then the remaining dry ingredients, being careful not to over-mix.
  6. Fill the cupcake liners about 2/3 full and bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
  7. To make the frosting, beat the room temperature butter until creamy. Blend in the cream cheese until smooth. Add vanilla, orange extracts, salt, and a teaspoon of orange zest.
  8. Gradually add confectioner’s sugar, mixing until smooth. Frost the cupcakes as desired and sprinkle with cinnamon.

Notes

Let cupcakes cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.
