A colorful twist on classic bagels, these whimsical Rainbow Bagels are not only visually striking but also soft and chewy, making them a delightful breakfast treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
  • Food coloring (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Divide the dough into equal portions and dye each with food coloring. Wrap in cling wrap.
  5. Roll each colored dough portion into long strips and twist together to form bagels.
  6. Let the shaped bagels rise on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) in the last 5 minutes of rise.
  8. Boil a large pot of water and stir in baking soda. Boil each bagel for about 30 seconds on each side.
  9. Transfer bagels to the baking sheet, brush with egg wash, and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

For best results, use fresh yeast. Customize colors and toppings to your liking!
