Balela Salad (Trader Joe’s Copycat)

A vibrant and flavorful Middle Eastern salad featuring chickpeas, black beans, and fresh herbs, perfect for summer gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 2 (15-ounce) cans chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 white onion, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 dry pint grape tomatoes, quartered
  • ½ cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh mint, chopped
  • 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon sumac
  • Pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine the chickpeas, black beans, diced onion, minced garlic, quartered tomatoes, parsley, and mint in a large mixing bowl and toss gently.
  2. In a jar, combine olive oil, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, sumac, cayenne pepper, and salt. Secure the lid and shake well.
  3. Pour the dressing over the salad and gently toss to coat.
  4. Let the salad chill in the fridge for 30 minutes before serving to enhance flavors.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for better flavor absorption. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
