  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • Buttercream frosting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. Beat in the egg, then mix in the sour cream until just blended.
  4. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until combined.
  5. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  6. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  7. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
  10. Cool on a wire rack before decorating with frosting if desired.

Notes

Chill the dough for better shape retention. Store cookies in an airtight container for up to a week or freeze for longer storage.
