Irresistibly Sweet Southern Candied Yams

A comfort food classic featuring tender sweet potatoes baked with a sweet, spiced syrup.

  • 3 medium sweet potatoes (about 1.5 lbs)
  • 5 tbsp salted butter, room temperature
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Carefully peel and rinse the sweet potatoes. Slice into ½-inch to 1-inch thick rounds.
  3. Grease a baking dish with butter.
  4. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Simmer for about 3 minutes until well combined and slightly thickened.
  5. Pour the syrup mixture over the sliced sweet potatoes and cover with foil.
  6. Bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and stir potatoes gently.
  7. Increase oven temperature to 425°F (220°C) and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes until caramelized.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

You can prepare the sweet potatoes and syrup a day in advance. Adjust sugar to taste for desired sweetness.
